Today is a day for UPG — Unverified/Unusual Personal Gnosis. This is one of the things that people often dispute. However by saying that it is both Unverified and Personal, I will be saying that it is more something that is personal and not necessarily considered “accurate” by a lot of people.
For me, what I have come to PERSONALLY think is that Poseidon is also the god of the “seas of space”. He is described as holding the earth (probably because the Hellenic people thought the ocean supported the land) and because of that the modern understanding with the Earth floating through space this would be something that would fit.
Edward Butler’s essay in From the Roaring Deep provides ample philosophical evidence to support your position.

Interestingly enough, although I HAVE read that essay, my “aha” moment with this position was after hearing “Come Sail Away” by STYX while working on one of my posts earlier this month
