A Month of Devotional Thought — Demeter, Day 20

In contrast to yesterday’s post, today’s is about the trait of Demeter that I find the most problematic. They are actually tied together. Just as Demeter is very caring to those she loves, she can be incredibly vindictive.

Unfortunately, when she is vindictive, it tends to splash over onto the innocent as it did while she was grieving over her missing daughter. She caused the crops to fail and would have created a famine if her daughter was not returned to her. This would have caused mortals to die and sacrifices to end had her daughter not come back in time to prevent it.
