A Month of Devotional Thought — Hestia: Day 20

Today’s topic is what quality or qualities of this deity you find most disturbing. And for me, this is problematic as some of the same qualities that I like the most are also some of the most disturbing when they are used as being the ONLY things that define Hestia.

There are many people who understand Hestia only in terms of the HOUSEHOLD hearth, where they seem to think of her only in terms of being the “Cinderella” of the Theoi — this despite that the mistress of the hearth in many pre-Christian European cultures was actually the “queen” of that household. The reason that people tend to have that view is that her quiet and peacemaking aspect also seems to overshadow what I see as one of her more powerful aspects of being the one that bends the arc of social justice towards equality in the long run.
In my opinion, the fact that the myths show her power to be a quiet one is the major reason that she is not given the credit she deserves and is thought by some to have no distinct personality. Yet, she is more than just the guardian of the hearth; she IS the very fire upon it.
