The fictional portrayals of our Gods and what we should do about it.

There is some discussion going on in Polytheist circles about the depiction of our Gods in modern fiction. A lot of people are opposed to things like the Percy Jackson series or the depictions of Thor and Loki in the comics (and now movies). I see the movies and books as a mixture of good and bad.

I definitely see them as good in that they can spark an interest in the Mythos behind our faiths. However, I can also see where people have found them to be bad in as much as they do not show an ACCURATE portrayal of that same Mythos.

I myself do not like the portrayal of Hades in movies like the remake of Clash of the Titans or the movie version of Percy Jackson and the Lightning Thief (which only superficially followed the book version) because they make Him a villain as opposed to how he is in the old Myths — a God to be respected (and perhaps feared because of his association with Death) but NOT an ‘evil’ being per se. I DID like the way that Hestia was portrayed in Percy Jackson and the Last Olympian but think that there could have been deeper treatments of other Gods and Goddesses.

Does this mean that there will not be people who are inspired by the books and movies to look deeper into the background stories? Absolutely not.  That is where we must step up as a community. We need to let the seekers know that there are people out there that still actively worship the Gods of the stories and that we need to let them know that we are not just flakes and nuts, but as “normal” as anyone who worships the God of Abraham…..  This will not be an easy task, but as a community we can be up to it.
