Recently, my sister was visiting from out of state and one of the first things that I told her was that I made a daily offering of the first cup of coffee brewed each day. She looked at me like I was a little off and (possibly) reluctantly agreed to abide by it as it was my house. This has gotten me thinking as to the reasons why a daily offering is needed.
First and foremost, it is a daily reaffirmation of our dedication to the Gods we worship. It serves us as a reminder that we are part of a larger Cosmos and is an invitation for the Gods to be part of our day-to-day lives.
Secondly, it puts us in the state of mind to remember to include the Gods in our home lives (and work lives if we can). This serves as a reminder that the Gods are always there for us — even when we don’t feel their presence.
Finally, it is a good habit to be in. It gets us in the habit of worshiping the Gods. They may not require our worship, but it is a good thing for US to be doing so that we can feel closer to them.
Regular worship is part of a living faith, even if it is as simple as a cup of coffee……
