This is a Maxim that would seem to be impossible to live. There is no life that is completely without sorrow but we can live our lives in a way that we minimize our sorrow. We canlive our lives in a way that minimizes regrets. We can live our lives in a way that we cause others a minimum of sorrow and thus do not have to deal with as much of other people’s sorrows as possible. This is the challenge of this Maxim and we need to employ mindfulness in order to meet it.
Mindfulness is the key to this Maxim as well as with others. We need to be mindful of our own emotions as well as the emotions of others. We need to be mindful of our actions and the emotional weight of those actions. We need to be mindful of the way our emotions and actions interact in our lives with the people around us. And finally, we need to be mindful that we are not the cause of our own sorrows.
When we act with this level of mindfulness we then can minimize the negative impact of events and actions on our emotions. This is the only way that we can live the message of this Maxim – to live with a minimum of sorrow.
