#78 – Observe what you have heard (Ακουων ορα)

This Maxim is very much about being aware of what is going on around you. It is about listening as opposed to merely hearing things. When someone wants to observe something, they pay attentionto that thing or event. But most people do not think of the sense of hearing when they think of observation, and this is a mistake. You can observe something with any of your senses including your sense of hearing. As I sit and write this, I can hear the clicking of the keys, the ticking of the clock, and the humming of a refrigerator. These are background noises to what I am doing, but if they were different then I would know that there is something not right with the situation.
Awareness does not have to be just of the large things. Sometimes, awareness of the small things is just as valuable as it makes us realize when something is not right with a situation. And certainly, we should use all of our senses together in order to accomplish the task of awareness in all things and all situations. The Gods gave them to us for a reason – and to enjoy the awareness of life is certainly a good one.
