#74 – Revere a sense of shame (Αισχυνην σεβου)

This is a Maxim that seems to be contradictory on its face. After all, why would one want to revere a sense of shame? It is our sense of shame that prompts us to behave in a proper manner. And it is because of this that we should be reverent towards it. It is our sense of shame that helps us to see when we have erred and when we should make amends towards others. It is our sense of shame that helps counterbalance our sense of pride and prevent us from becoming hubristic. And, it is our sense of shame that prompts us to do better in the future.
All of these are reasons to revere this sense as it is one of our guides towards a virtuous life and to actually view it as a gift to us from the Gods. For if we do not revere it, we do not value the lessons that it can teach us. If we do not revere it, we will not realize when we have offended towards others. If we do not revere our sense of shame, and the lessons that it teaches, we will not make progress towards our own arête because we will not progress on the path of the virtues. And that would be a shame…
